Corporate and Kids Magic Shows: What’s the Difference?

When you book a magician for an event, you need to make sure you have the right show from the right professional for your audience. After all, what kid has ever been willing to sit through a complete corporate presentation, even if it’s cool? And there’s no adult that will willingly put themselves through a kids show without a child of their own.

But if you’ve never booked a professional magician before, it’s hard to know the difference, or what to look for! But I’ve broken it all down here, so you can learn

  • Why it’s good that kids magic shows are shorter

  • Why adult magic shows don’t work for kids

  • How kids magic shows and adult magic shows are structured

  • How big each kind of party should be

Magic Difficulty Level

Magic is never easy. If it were, everyone would know how to do it! But there is difficulty, and then there is difficulty. Some of it plays better with the right audience, and some of it flies over heads, so it’s important to know which is which.

Corporate

Adults appreciate subtlety and complexity. These are the kinds of shows where magicians can do close up magic and tricks that look small but stick with you for hours because even up close, you can’t figure them out. The illusions in adult magic shows are smaller, but much more difficult.

Kids

Children are aware that there’s a lot they don’t know about the world. When they see complex tricks, for all they know, that’s just how things always work. That’s why kids magic is simpler, but also bigger and showier. Magicians work with objects and concepts kids already know all about, and make it big and funny to keep their attention.

Length of Magic Show

Like many other things in life, the quality of the magic show doesn’t come from the length, but what we do with it. (Wink wink!)

Corporate

Adults have much longer attention spans than kids do, so corporate magic shows get to be as long as you want - they can go as long as an hour! Tricks can be woven together, and the magician can even incorporate a storyline because they know that the grown ups will follow it.

Kids

This one is simple - kids magic shows are shorter, just like their attention spans! They tend to run twenty to thirty minutes because children just aren’t willing to sit around and for much longer. Often the magician can hang around and do a few individual tricks for interested kids, or they’ll offer other party services, but the magic show itself is pretty quick.

The Show Around the Magic Show

Have you ever noticed that a magic show isn’t just magic? There’s so much more to putting on a good show than the illusions within it, like making you laugh while we do it!

Corporate

Corporate magic shows allow for a much more adult sense of story and humor. Not only can a corporate magic show withstand a storyline as discussed above, but the magician can also play with the audience’s attempt to figure out the trick and make more adult jokes that would, at best, fly over the heads of kids. Magicians are also often comedians.

Kids

Kids magic shows are so much sillier! The show involves less of a story and more of a funny character. It’s almost like clown work, but without the makeup and outfit. The magician can still make your kids laugh, but it’s over the top kids humor, like a character who is shocked by how many handkerchiefs come out of their mouth.

The Size of the Magic Show

Don’t get me wrong, at all ages there can be magic shows of all sizes. You can do kids magic for just the family, or a corporate show for an audience of hundreds. But when it comes to what each show typically looks like and how the average event goes, the below seems to hold pretty true.

Corporate

Corporate magic shows tend to be smaller, for just one or two company teams. Or even less than that, they’re big events but with performers doing walk around magic for groups of two to five or so. They incorporate personal interaction and close up magic work.

Kids

A kid’s birthday party is often a huge affair, with at least all of the kids from their class, and sometimes more. That’s a lot of people with a very short attention span! In order to keep every child’s attention for the entire show, it has to involve showier, grander illusions. Those require some space, but there isn't a kid (or parent!) who won’t be mesmerized by them.

I hope these distinctions are helpful as you look for great performers for your party! While most magicians have packages that can accommodate either children or adults (including me!) it’s always important to make sure you’re getting the right show for your event. But, so long as you do, I can guarantee that everyone will have a… magical time.

Are there any differences between corporate and kids magic shows that you think I missed? Feel free to reach out to me with whatever you’ve noticed! You can email me anytime, or find me on Instagram at @magicalkatrina_ or TikTok at @magicalkatrina.

*** I know I link to a couple of other magicians here. Don’t worry, neither of them work anywhere close to you! One is in Nashville, and the other is in the UK. I’m not linking to your competition.  :)

This is another article where I didn’t include images because it’s perfectly reasonable for you to include pictures of you doing kids magic and corporate magic. If you’d like me to find something more generic instead, I’m happy to do that! But also, since it’s still on topic, you can just use your own photos, just so long as they’re not glamour shots but pictures of you actually doing the thing.
