Magic by the Ocean: My Afternoon at the Spring by the Sea Wedding Showcase at Regent Santa Monica Beach
There are certain days where I finish a performance, walk outside, and realize I've been smiling so long my face has actually filed a complaint. The Spring by the Sea Wedding Showcase at Regent Santa Monica Beach was one of those days.
I was invited to perform walkaround close-up magic for the showcase, which brought together more than 200 wedding professionals, planners, and luxury event vendors from all over the Los Angeles area. Picture it: the Pacific doing its glittering thing just past the windows, that particular Santa Monica light that makes everyone look like they've been professionally graded, and room after room of people who spend their lives making other people's biggest days beautiful.
And then there's me, in the middle of it, quietly asking a wedding planner to think of a card.
I've performed in a lot of gorgeous rooms across 20-plus countries, and I still get a small flutter walking into a space that's been styled to within an inch of its life. Every tablescape was considered. Every floral installation looked like it had opinions. There's something wonderfully humbling about being the magician at an event where everyone in the room is, in their own way, also in the business of making impossible things happen on a deadline.
Performing Close-Up Magic Among People Who Build Magic for a Living
Here's the thing about performing for wedding professionals: they are the toughest and the most delightful audience you could ask for.
Tough, because they've seen everything. They've watched a thousand cocktail hours unfold. They know exactly how long a room takes to warm up and exactly when a crowd starts checking their phones. Delightful, because when something genuinely surprises them, the mask comes completely off. I watched a very composed planner in an immaculate blazer let out a shriek that could have shattered a champagne flute, then immediately apologize, then immediately ask me to do it again.
That's my favorite part of walkaround magic. I'm not performing at people from a stage. I'm standing eighteen inches away, close enough that they can see my hands, close enough that the magic happens in their hands, not mine. Someone signs a card. Someone borrows my ring back from a place it has absolutely no business being. Somebody's own thought gets written down before they've said it out loud.
And then something better than the trick happens: the conversation. One person sees something impossible, grabs the arm of the stranger next to them, and says "you have to see this." Suddenly two vendors who'd never met are standing shoulder to shoulder, laughing, trading business cards afterward. I've watched close-up magic dissolve more networking awkwardness than any icebreaker ever invented.
This is exactly why cocktail-hour magic works so beautifully at weddings. That first hour after a ceremony is a strange, floaty stretch of time. The couple is off taking photos. Guests from wildly different corners of two lives are meeting for the first time, holding a drink, wondering who to talk to. A close-up wedding magician moving through that room gives everyone something to react to together. By the time the couple walks in, the guests already feel like a group instead of a collection of polite strangers. As a cocktail hour magician, my actual job description is less "do tricks" and more "make sure nobody in this room feels like they're standing alone."
I got to spend the afternoon meeting planners, designers, florists, photographers, and production teams whose work I've admired for years, which is a real perk of a showcase like this. Also I ate a piece of cake standing up like a raccoon, and I regret nothing.
Regent Santa Monica Beach: A Venue That Does Half the Work for You
I want to talk about the venue for a moment, because Regent Santa Monica Beach really is something.
The oceanfront setting is the obvious headline. You have the water right there, and that light does things to a room in the late afternoon that no lighting designer could fully replicate. But what struck me more was how the event spaces are designed to feel generous and calm rather than showy. Wide, airy rooms. Materials that feel expensive without shouting about it. Terraces where a guest can slip outside for air and come back in feeling refreshed instead of exiled.
From a performer's perspective, I read a venue for very practical things: sightlines, sound, and flow. Can guests hear each other? Is there room for a small group to gather around me without blocking a service path? Does the space naturally encourage people to mingle instead of clustering by the bar? Regent Santa Monica Beach passed all three, easily.
Standing in those rooms, it took approximately zero effort to imagine a Regent Santa Monica Beach wedding: a ceremony with the ocean behind it, a cocktail hour spilling out onto the terrace, a reception that glows as the sun goes down. I fully expect to be back here for someone's wedding, and I very much hope I'm holding a deck of cards when it happens.

Regent Santa Monica Beach
Our host for the day, and a beautiful one. The team opened up their oceanfront event spaces for the showcase and made more than 200 industry guests feel genuinely welcomed rather than merely accommodated, which is a harder trick than anything in my act. The property itself makes a compelling case for a Santa Monica beach wedding all on its own.

BBJ La Tavola
Linens are the thing nobody notices until they're wrong, and BBJ La Tavola made sure nobody noticed a thing. Their textures and tones anchored the tablescapes throughout the showcase and gave every other design element something beautiful to sit on.

Blitz Nation
Blitz Nation brought live music and production expertise to the showcase, and you could feel the difference in the room's energy. They're an LA-based music collective offering bands, DJs, and musicians alongside full in-house production, and they understand something a lot of people miss: the music sets the pace at which a room breathes.

Bright Event Rentals supplied furnishings and tabletop pieces that gave the showcase its shape. Rentals are the invisible architecture of an event, and theirs made each vignette feel considered rather than assembled.

Casa Del Fiori's floral work brought colour and softness into the space in a way that photographed beautifully and, more importantly, felt lovely to stand next to. I kept catching guests pausing mid-conversation just to look.

What stayed with me after Spring by the Sea wasn't the ocean view, lovely as it was. It was the people. There's a specific kind of joy in a room full of creatives who have all chosen to spend their careers making other people's happiest days beautiful, and who still get excited about it. Everyone I met was generous, funny, and absurdly good at what they do.
I'm very lucky that my particular corner of this industry involves standing close to people and watching their faces change. Whatever else is happening at a wedding, a moment of genuine astonishment shared between strangers is a very good thing to be able to hand out.
