Los Angeles Face Painters for Parties

So... curious about what it takes to become a face painter for children’s parties in Orange County? I’ll answer all of your burning questions here and then some so please read on if you want some advice tips and tricks to learn the face painting trade !

Can I make money face painting?

Absolutely! Face painting is requested for birthday parties, festivals, community events, corporate events and more. Professional face painters typically make between $150-$200 for two hours of work if booking directly with a client. At Magical Katrina we pay all of our performers $100-125 if they have their own skills, costumes, experience and props.  We also offer free training and lower starting rates if you are a beginner and you don’t know how to start on your own.

-Basically,  if you’re just starting out, you may need to start with lower rates to get more experience, and then gradually increase your prices to meet your needs. Be ready to back up your rates with high-quality photos of your past work.

How do I learn to do face painting?

Just like any other skill, face painting takes practice. First, check out online courses, instructional guides, and videos of professional face paint techniques. Here at Magical Katrina we have hundreds of how to videos for our performers to study from on YouTube.  Next, gather all the necessary materials and try out your new skills on friends and family. If you already have a natural artistic ability, you’re well on your way to becoming a face painter! If you still need a bit of practice, that’s okay. Keep at it until you’re comfortable and pleased with your finished work.

What kind of paint do I use?

If you’re serious about becoming a face painter, you should choose high-quality cosmetic face paint that is hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and specifically made for skin. You should never use acrylic or tempura paints on skin. Even if they are “non-toxic,” that does not mean that they are safe for face painting. The best face paints are water-based or water-activated, and are much more similar to cosmetic makeup than “paint.”

Are face paint crayons any good?

Face paint crayons can be a great option for new face painters. They are washable and easy to use for simple cheek designs. However, face paint crayons do not offer the same bold colors or design capabilities as standard face paint.

Where can I find face painting patterns?

Face painting patterns and stencils can be purchased at any craft store, but we recommend Snazaroo’s beginners guide for detailed instructions and patterns for various face paint designs.

Do face painters need insurance?

Insurance is recommended for face painters, but it’s not a requirement. Many professional face painters carry liability insurance to protect their business and to stay up-to-date with FDA regulations.

Do I need a criminal records check?

A criminal records check is not required to become a professional face painter. However, some clients may need this information before feeling comfortable booking your services, especially if they’re planning a children’s party. Here at Magical Katrina  we run background checks on all of our new party performers.

5 Tips for Performing Live Virtual Magic shows if you're a Magician

Virtual Magic Shows for Birthday Parties and Corporate Events

We live in a very challenging time and though many in person shows have stopped, the new world of virtual shows has come to the forefront. Here are some important and helpful nuggets of knowledge I have gathered doing a variety of virtual magic shows over the last three months on various platforms. You’re probably wondering why you should even care about virtual shows. I’m sorry to break the news to you: unfortunately -- like it or not -- virtual shows are here to stay.

Yes, someday we will be able to return to the tables, stages, trade shows, and cruise ships we used to perform on. We will have live audiences again (even if new social distancing rules are in place) *but* our vocations and avocations will have been forever changed by the events that have taken place in the last few months. One of the repercussions of the pandemic is that a medium to share magic has now blossomed: Virtual Shows. The cork cannot be put back in that bottle.

Virtual Shows are the New “Wild West” of Magic

It’s scary, beautiful and amazing when you think about it. We are living in the middle of history being made. The steps we take as a community now to adapt to social distancing and safety will forever shape how laymen and audiences think of magicians. We need to embrace this change. It can be little off-putting, especially for a community so enriched by our history and entrenched in tradition but I believe we can adapt: by adding virtual magic offerings as an alternative to live shows you not only provide more options for your clients but also enhance the opportunity to fatten your wallet.

I am not an expert, but in the last few months I have done my fair share of public shows and private events. I recently won a magic contest at the online convention AbraCORNdabra. Since this pandemic began I have failed more times than I can count, but have continued to improve. I hope the following tips will not only educate but also help you learn from my mistakes so you don’t repeat them.

1. Know your platform for your online magic show

Just as you would arrive early to a gig or research the venue ahead of time - virtual magic is no different. Whether you’re performing on a lawn in the backyard or a stage with many stagehands, you need to be prepared for how the logistics of your show will run. Video platforms are the same in that sense but also extremely different.

Zoom is one of the most flexible applications to use for virtual performances because neither Facebook Live or Youtube Live have the high level of interaction available in video chat that exists on Zoom. The number of people who can join a “meeting” on Zoom is also higher than in Facebook Messenger or Google Hangouts. Zoom also has many wonderful built-in features: you can mute everyone in the audience, unmute specific volunteers, pin a video, share normal audio or even just computer audio to play music but not pick up background sounds. One of the best features is the ability to “spotlight” yourself so that even with the audience’s sound on your camera still remains the main focus. This is wonderful if you like hearing the direct feedback of a live audience so you can know in real-time if a magic moment or joke landed. This is great for small audiences but can be rather difficult when you have more people on the call.

Whenever you do a show on a new platform you should offer a test call to the client so you can demonstrate the ins and outs of the program and make the client comfortable. You should discuss the technical details before the show as well. You can discuss making the client the co-host or adding you as the co-host to the meeting. A good option can be to start as host and then hand the meeting over to the client when your magic show finishes, log out and let the client finish having their event. Many people who throw private parties or corporate meetings might not know all the ins and outs of the programs, so offering this special attention and educating them free of charge will really make you stand out as a thoughtful and professional performer. The key is to be very comfortable with the video platforms you are using and do your research so you don’t make any mistakes. You don’t want to assume all of the platforms are alike because they are not.

For example, a few weeks ago I performed on Instagram Live doing magic on a client’s site while talking up their product. Due to the fact that I had multiple roles: being the trade show magician, combining magic with selling the client’s product, as well as the stress of being on a new platform, I didn’t want to also have to worry about plugging myself or what I do. So I simplified by making a sign with my website. But I made the mistake of thinking all virtual platforms were the same.

I didn’t realize that Instagram Live flips your video backwards as it records whereas Zoom shows things to your audience as they would look if you were in the same room. This difference is critical when changing platforms. If you have your name, website or logo on your backdrop or your Instagram handle written out on your table it could become unreadable to your audience if you don’t allow for the differences in display on the viewer’s screen.

Fortunately, I was aware of this platform quirk ahead of time, spelled my name backwards and printed the sign out with my name reversed. Unfortunately, the individual letters of my name weren’t also reversed and my name was still illegible.

That didn’t turn out well. Don’t be like me. Be better than me. Make sure you understand how the platform operates.

Fortunately the client didn’t notice. But I lost the valuable opportunity to promote myself to their 50k followers. Since then I have discovered this amazing tool an instagram user invented to flip your image and you can use it as well to avoid the same fate: https://www.instagram.com/a/r/?effect_id=236000317751197

It is even more vital to know the differences for each platform if you are doing a prediction or writing something out that moves your act forward so that the magic doesn’t look backwards to the audience! There are many other differences such as how audio is handled, the size of the cropped frame, audience interaction (is it via chat or video) to consider when using a new platform. I can’t discuss all of the options because they vary so much from each platform. The key is to make sure you have done several tests with the platform your show will use so you can be the expert for your client and make the client feel comfortable and safe when hiring you. Doing so will also ensure that you get the most out of your shows.

2. Lighting is Everything in a virtual magician show

You and your props need to be seen by your audience! Add this phrase to your vocabulary: Three Point Lighting.

Three point lighting is a way to light a subject and diminish shadows around the subject so it is focused within the frame. Instead of one direct light on yourself you have three. This doesn’t have to be complicated and you don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of new and expensive equipment.

Standard three point lighting set up

All you need is one main light or “key” light. It can be as simple as a desk lamp or ring light. This main light shines on you directly and you should set it preferably behind or next to the camera in front of you. Then you have two “fill” lights which you put to your left and right so that there aren’t any shadows behind you to distract the audience from your magic (which is a topic for another day).

Make sure to also test the lighting on your props as well as yourself by making a short recording. Watch that recording and determine whether you end up underexposed or overexposed and need to dim or brighten the lighting. This process is different for every person. For example, if I make my light too bright and frame myself against a black backdrop my cards (which are mostly white) and my skin (also extremely white) will be washed out and impossible to see. Play with positioning the lights and the wattage of the light and you can get just the right effect for your set up.

This three point standard style of lighting is commonly used in TV, film, and even by actors doing self-tapes and now magicians! You may need to play with the angles and brightness of your lights to completely get rid of shadows and be clear but this little lighting trick can make a massive impact on your show and really take it to the next level.

3. Frame Yourself if you’re a virtual magician doing an online magic show for kids or a corporate magic show for adults!

No, not for a crime. I mean for your video, silly. Your virtual magic show framing, camera angles, and background should be thought of as the set for a play or a real live performance.

There are no hard or fast rules to how to frame yourself or what to put in the background. Many magicians use green screens, sheets that have been ironed and clipped up, curtains, or even just their bookshelves in their own home. The key detail is that all of these choices are clear and deliberate. There should not be any garbage, random furniture, unrelated magic tricks, or dirty socks in the background (unless your magician character would have these in their home). Everything on screen should be character driven or relate to your performance.

Nathaniel’s magic show Setup for an instagram live show involving 22,000 people!

If you’re not sure what to do, at the very least you can keep it simple and use a backdrop so that your background doesn’t distract the viewer from your magic. On the other hand, you could also use this unique opportunity to get creative with your set and use what’s around. If I wanted to do a comedic magic performance as a character whose life is a mess, I might film my set on the bathroom floor (probably not for a corporate show, though). Who knows? That’s one of the exciting things about this new magic frontier!

If you want to step up your virtual game even more you can use a more advanced application such as ManyCam (https://manycam.com) which allows you to stream to Facebook and YouTube, add a picture within a picture (such as a close up shot of your face in the corner of a larger shot of your hands and the actual magic happening). One of the most useful features of ManyCam is the opportunity to use multiple video sources. They make it easy to effortlessly switch from a parlor view to a close-up camera to even a shot of your audience reacting. This allows you to pick volunteers and engage with them smoothly and be able to perform many different types of magic. The idea of having many different cameras to switch between may sound overly complicated or expensive but it doesn’t have to be. You can use any extra smartphone you have and connect it to your WiFi or any other way to access the internet. Just make sure the camera with the best video quality is the one you use for your main establishing shots. This setup can be a little more complicated to get going, but if you have the time and the will you can do it. (Note: ManyCam does require a little bit of technical know-how to make it work with Zoom or other platforms. [But Google is your friend.]).

Simple framing and backdrop with one video source for a virtual magic show

4. Visual vs. Interactive: What’s Better for Virtual Platforms?

Trick Question! Both are extremely important. I’ve heard many magicians in the last few months say that they are changing their entire stage act to have zero audience participation or saying it’s impossible with the virtual platforms to have a live audience. But that simply is not true. The audience is there and they love live interactive tricks. Many professional magicians are mailing props to their clients to use from home, sending them printable cards or tokens to follow along with that the viewers can print from home, or simply using normal things that can be found in viewers’ homes to get them physically involved.

That being said, there are some platforms like TikTok Live and Instagram Live where you can do a live show with an audience but the chat may lag 20-30 seconds and it may not be smart to wait for the audio to catch up because doing so can ruin the flow of your show and you have to fill time between. In that case you may want to experiment with more visual and storytelling magic. I personally think you need a good combination of both tricks that involve audience participation and which are also visual and passive for your audience. Many of the options we had before to interact with viewers are no longer viable, but these new restrictions will hopefully force us as magicians to be more creative in how we engage our audiences.

There are many positives to virtual shows as well because we can now offer a close up experience and stage magic in the same show for a larger audience. We can control many aspects we couldn’t before more closely such as angles and we should really be taking advantage of these new perks!

5. Don’t be afraid to go back to the basics when doing virtual zoom magic shows.

“The simplest tricks are often the most mystifying and never lose their charm.” -Tarbell Course in Magic

If you are a working magician you shouldn’t be afraid to do simple classics that may fit this virtual medium better than the overly complicated slight you love (but looks terrible on Zoom). When performing for laymen you’re not trying to show off your giant elaborate magic vocabulary. You are being paid to bring people joy and make them believe in the impossible. Often the more simple a trick is, the more impossible it seems.

I know some people may disagree. Please don’t misunderstand, it’s wonderful to be inventive but we shouldn’t be performing something that doesn’t work for our audiences just because as magicians we like its complexity. This problem can often be seen in live shows and it’s amplified with virtual shows.

Magicians shouldn’t be afraid to do magic that fits the platform even if the tricks are simple like invisible decks. Despite Ambitious being more involved, the invisible deck never ceases to be the highlight... it always seems to get a bigger reaction in virtual shows because it’s a card the viewer chose off of the top of his or her head freely from home. It may be annoyingly simple to the magician but it is really powerful to the audience. It’s the same with swami writing and predicting a volunteer’s number. Both of these effects are pretty easy and we magicians often forget how powerful and interactive they are because we would rather show off or do something challenging for ourselves.

At the end of the day it’s important that we remember we are creating magic and wonder for others. It’s a joy to perform but we are also trying to craft a specific experience for the audience. We are performing for them.

This new “frontier” we are exploring is a confusing, cruel and exciting mistress and It will take everyone some time to fully master this new world. But with these simple guidelines I hope I have given you some new things to think about and tools to help improve your future virtual shows.

An Interview with Female Magician Magical Katrina

An Interview with Female Magician Magical Katrina

1) How did you become interested in magic?

Growing up I was obsessed with vampires and witches and musical theater. When I was a little girl I always wanted to be magical. I was a witch every year for Halloween for 4 years in a row. But I didn't really know what a magician was specifically. My mother never got me a magic kit. Growing up poor I never saw a magician perform at a birthday party or even on TV. The first magician I ever saw was Gob from Arrested Development at 16. Not exactly a cool or glamorous portrayal of our industry.

Ten years ago I got my first job as a princess: balloon twisting, face painting, and performing magic at children's parties. I would perform a 30-minute magic show at every single party I did. However, for the first five years of my career if you had asked me what I did for a living I would have told you I was a “professional princess.” Even though most of my job was literally doing a solo magic show… it didn’t seem cool to say. And honestly, I didn’t think there were any female magicians. To me, I was just a magical princess.

That all changed when I moved to Los Angeles to make it as an actress. That’s when I started taking classes at the Magic Castle. That’s when I fell in love with magic as an art form. And that’s when I first saw world class magicians that treated magic as true theatre. The magicians there are some of the best in the world. They use character, as well as compelling storytelling, to give the magic meaning. I realized what I love about theater can be incorporated into magic. That’s when my life really pivoted and I started consuming magic videos and taking it more seriously. I began performing for adults and focusing on it as more than just a way to make a living – an actual career.

2) What was your first professional magic job?

I was a princess at children's parties doing a simple 30-minute kids’ show that involved a dove pan, color changing silks, sponge bunnies, disappearing rose, and that one where the peanut butter and jelly switch places and multiply (kind of like a kid-friendly version of multiplying bottles). My show was actually fairly terrible, but I had to sink or swim, because I was doing it to make a living. I got pretty good at children’s magic pretty fast.

3) What magician influenced you the most?

I am inspired by those who are confident in their character. My favorite magicians are those that have strong viewpoints and who use magic as a tool that supports their character's lens, story, and the universe they have crafted. Some of my favorites who inspire me daily are Rob Zabrecky (who directed my virtual show), Carissa Hendrix, David Kovac, Tina Lenert, Max Maven, Xavier Mortimer, Mac King, and Jeff McBride.

4) How did you learn most of your tricks and illusions?

Books, videos, buying tricks, and learning them with the instructions included with them. Doing the same thing over and over, and learning from failure.

5) What was your biggest challenge when you first started?

Two major challenges:

1. I have ADHD, and my biggest challenge was just sitting down and practicing something. However, as with dancing or circus arts, it could be really, really thrilling and addictive when I would get in the zone and focus. I also was able to overcome my easily-distracted nature by combining magic with multi-tasking. So I’ll often practice and listen to music or a book on Audible while looking in the mirror and doing the moves.

2. Another thing that was super difficult was learning audience control. Kids are brutally honest and will call you out if you mess something up. Since those were my first audiences I think it really helped me develop a thick skin and calm under pressure or when things go wrong on stage.

6) What’s your favorite style of magic to watch or perform?

I love watching close-up magic, but strolling magic is my favorite to perform. It is so fun to walk up to different groups and jazz with the magic and the jokes, changing it up depending on the audience. It’s hard not to love virtual magic shows though – because I can do them while traveling.

7) How do gauge your success?

By how much money I make yearly. By how many gigs I consistently book per month. And by how much better I get at work life balance (which, to be honest, I’m terrible at!).

7) How do you feel when you see magic in the movies or on TV?

I feel really excited and proud. I feel like magic is now considered (kind of) cool. When I see magic represented in media I feel like our culture finally thinks of us as an art form worthy of recognition. I think magic has often been viewed as silly, and portrayed as a joke on TV (e.g. Arrested Development). So seeing films like Now You See Me or Magic Camp coming out that make magic look awesome, I find a newfound pride in being a magician.

9) Do you experience stage fright? If so, how do you overcome it?

I get super nervous before every performance no matter how big or small. I overcome it by doing self talk and reassuring myself of all of my years of experience and hours of practice. The more prepared I am, the more I am able to comfort myself and feel confident. So I try to overprepare. Especially when performing for other magicians, because that’s what makes me the most nervous. So yes, this convention will be outside of my comfort zone – but outside of your comfort zone is where growth happens, and I know it will be a success.

10) How well do you take constructive criticism towards your act?

I love it. Coming from a musical theater background, I love notes. I don’t know why more magicians don’t hire directors, ask friends for notes, solicit feedback, and gather ideas more often. In theater rehearsals you perform the play, then you immediately grab the script and a pencil, then the entire cast sits down and the director gives you notes. That’s the default when you rehearse. That’s what makes a performance art a performance art – you sculpt a story, and that story is crafted with intention. Art can’t be created in a vacuum. The crucible of other people is what forges true art.

Before I performed on Penn and Teller’s Fool Us or did my virtual show for the Magic Castle, I rehearsed more than 100 times for friends – and every one of those shows had note sessions afterwards. I love notes. They make me better.

11) How do you create new routines?

Sometimes I fall in love with a classic magic trick, and then I think of a story or song I could set it to. Sometimes the story or song comes first, and then I discover the perfect trick to accompany it. For example I have always loved it when people look like their dogs, and I’m working on a trick involving that…I’ve had the idea for years and done multiple versions with different types of forces and matching-themed tricks….it’s always been the same story, and it’s always about people looking like their dogs. But over the years it’s evolved to incorporate different props and utilize different methods.

12) What are the rules that you follow in Magic?

I practice every trick extremely thoroughly so I don’t ruin the magic for my audience. I also never do the same trick more than once, and I always try to make my volunteers look good and have the opportunity  to play and make choices that empower them when they’re on stage with me.

I make sure to be very honest that it’s all fake, and urge people to question reality and question the magic. We have to keep the secrets, so I’ll never reveal how a trick works when I’m performing – but if a person (usually a child) shouts out a guess, I never shut them down. I encourage them to guess (knowing that I won’t tell them the real answer), because magic is an amazing tool for cultivating critical thinking and creative problem solving. I always recommend  they try learning magic if it inspires them to think. Those vocally-skeptical kids are the ones truly thinking like a magician, and I think that’s beautiful. I don’t reveal secrets, but I would never try to discourage anyone who is inquisitive and curious. I would also never lie or pretend to have real magical powers. I don’t like charlatans.

13) If you were to write your autobiography in just six words, what would that be?

Experience everything. Live bravely. Live extraordinarily.

Magical Katrina Performs with Magicians Without Borders in Africa
Interactive magic at a Hospital in South Africa

Interactive magic at a Hospital in South Africa

In January I went on a service trip with Magicians without boarders in Africa. We traveled to Cape Town and surrounding villages. We performed organized theater shows to raise funds for local educational groups as well as impromptu performances for children in refugee camps, orphanages townships, and hospitals. Here’s one of my favorite and most unique experiences:

Magic at St. Josephs Home for children

IMG_20200106_155031_Original.jpg

While doing magic at st. Joseph’s Home for children in South Africa I called up a little girl with heavy burns on her entire body for  a magic trick. Once on the stage I noticed she didn’t have all of her fingers on her left hand and the other was a stump. The trick required making a fist and holding your hand up. I was worried perhaps she wouldn’t be able to do the trick or that confronting her disability would traumatize her and I thought of sending her back. In 3 seconds I decided against it, I wanted to help make her the hero of the magic trick and not ruin the flow of the show by sending her back and picking someone else. Fortunately for me she held her hand correctly, didn’t blink at all when I asked her which hand she preferred using to hold things and at the end of the trick she was so proud to show her hand to everyone.

83984625_3776530822358817_9070233199799435264_n.jpg

Her reality was that she didn’t have the same hands as everyone else and instead of being upset about it she had accepted that and worked within her abilities. She was 7 and don’t blink an eye when I asked her which hand was best to use. After the show she was one of the first children to run up and hug me. I am so glad that I didn’t send her back to the audience due to her disability. I was worried that because she was different she wouldn’t be able to help but she did just fine and had a blast. I think the experience was even more powerful for her because she wasn’t treated any differently and at that moment when she held up her hand to show everyone if the trick worked she was so proud and got a huge round of applause. I’m glad I was able to make a small difference in this girl’s life and that I was able to go out of my comfort zone as a performer and do something a little different.

All it took was some very specific  audience control and a little faith and the trick worked! I really love magical moments like this! 😍 what a unique experience. I’m so glad I joined Magicians Without Borders.

Winning First Place at the AbraCORNdabera Magic Convention Virtual Magic Show Contest

Magic Convention Virtual Magic Show Contest

Yes, conventions for magicians are a thing. And there is a convention held each year in Des Moines, Iowa called AbraCORNdabra. Yep. It's run by Iowa raised magician and Las Vegas veteran Steve Daly. Unlike other larger conventions, it is limited to just 200 attendees and truly gives the hometown Midwest feel. They also support young magicians through scholarships and youth programs. This May would have been their 10th anniversary, but due to the current health situation, was cancelled as with so many other events.

With the help of young magician Mikayla Oz, Steve hosted the convention online (renamed AbraCOVIDdabra) and made it free for all to attend through Zoom or Facebook live. In this special hour long convention, there were lectures, Q&A, interviews, prize giveaways, surprise performances, and a magic competition called the "Minute-To-Win-It", where contestants had one minute to show their best stuff and be voted on in real time by those in attendance.

Winners Of the Virtual Magic Show Contest Magicians Nathaniel and Katrina

Magical Nathaniel and Magical Katrina decided to enter and put a routine together. It was a true collaboration from ideation, prop building, choreography, music, and magic moments. With 9 other talented magicians competing, they won first place! It was a wonderful feeling to win and share an award, during a time where good news can at times be hard to come by. They hope that they were able to entertain and uplift all with a fun magic routine with a message. Nathaniel and Katrina are looking forward to spreading joy for the time being through virtual shows and future in person collaborations.

It was fairly nerve racking to perform in the contest because in addition to the challenges that come from performing a new and fairly sophisticated routine, we wanted to make sure all of the technical aspects of lighting, sound, and bandwidth we addressed.

“We feel so humbled and honored at the tremendous support we received during the convention through the votes in the competition and afterwards from the magic community. The hard work paid off and we are grateful to Steve Daly for putting this convention on and giving us the opportunity to share our magic with everyone.”

The Magic of Virtual Magicians – How They Can Make Your Virtual Event Unforgettable

Magic shows have always been a popular way to entertain people all over the world. However, with the ongoing pandemic, hosting live events has become quite challenging. That is where virtual magicians come in – they can bring the magic to your screens and make your virtual event unforgettable. From corporate events to virtual birthday parties, virtual magicians are becoming increasingly popular. In this blog post, we’ll be discussing everything you need to know about virtual magicians and how they can make your virtual event a success.

1. What is a Virtual Magician?

A virtual magician is a magician who performs magic tricks and shows via video conferencing platforms. By using various props and illusions, virtual magicians can create the same awe-inspiring experience for audiences as they would in a live performance. With the help of technology, virtual magicians can now interact with their audience in real-time and make their shows interactive and engaging.

2. The Advantages of Hiring a Virtual Magician

Hosting virtual events can often be dull and uninspiring, but virtual magicians can inject some much-needed excitement into your event. They can perform mind-boggling illusions, magic tricks, and even engage in interactive quizzes and games with your audience. Virtual magicians can customize their performances to your event’s theme, making it a unique and personalized experience for your attendees. Additionally, virtual magicians can perform for unlimited audiences, making it a cost-effective and scalable solution.

3. Types of Virtual Magic Shows

Virtual magicians can perform different types of magic shows, including close-up magic, stage shows, illusions, and mentalism. Close-up magic is perfect for small virtual events, as the magician performs right in front of the camera, creating an intimate and interactive experience. Stage shows, on the other hand, are better suited for larger virtual events with complex illusions and props. Illusion shows usually involve grander illusions, and mentalism shows include tricks that focus on the magician’s psychic abilities.

4. Technology and Virtual Magic Shows

Virtual magic shows require some technological setup to ensure smooth and seamless performances. Magicians use various video conferencing platforms, including Zoom, Skype, and WebEx, to perform their shows. Additional equipment such as a green screen, camera, microphone, and lighting also play an essential role in creating an immersive experience for the audience.

5. How to Choose the Right Virtual Magician for Your Virtual Event

When choosing a virtual magician, it’s essential to look for experienced and skilled performers who can customize their shows to your event theme. Ask for references and previous client testimonials to gauge their expertise. Additionally, opt for magicians who use high-quality equipment and have a good internet connection to avoid any technical glitches.

Conclusion:

Virtual magicians are changing the way people host virtual events. With their unique and innovative performances, they can make your virtual event unforgettable. From illusions to games, virtual magicians can engage your audience and create a memorable experience for them. So, the next time you’re planning a virtual event, consider hiring a virtual magician to add some magic to your event!

Hiring Magicians for Grown-ups – Corporate Magic Shows for Adults

Hiring Magicians for Grown-ups – Corporate Magic Shows for Adults

When some people think of a magician, the image that immediately comes to mind is that of a lanky teenage kid in an ill-fitting top hat doing tricks for kids. Although I myself have seen a number of these performers, I have also seen rooms of adults gasping in wonder at the spectacular magical talents of quality corporate magicians who create a tone that is ideally targeted to adult audiences.

Are Magic Shows a Good fit for Adults?

Well, yes and no. The distinction is that Adult magic shows are a good fit for an adult event. However, it can be difficult to know whether you are booking the correct style of performance. Magic shows can be a wonderful mix of comedy, audience participation, and amazing magical acts, if the performer is well suited to their audience. A good magician who caters to adults will create a show specifically designed to thrill your crowd with impossible feats and strong visual moments of magic. For corporate events, these types of magicians are often a better fit than other forms of entertainment because they play big even on a small stage, and they tend to be incredibly flexible even in the changing circumstances of a live event.

Tips for Booking a Good Magician

Ideally, you want to start with recommendations from friends or family members who have hired a magician they liked in the past. If no one has a recommendation, an entertainment agency will be able to offer you a list of qualified performers who will best fit your needs. As a last resort you can use google, but be warned. It’s easy to put together a professional looking website with stock images these days, so make sure your entertainer has good videos and nice photos of their show being performed in front of crowds of happy adult crowds.

Hopefully, this information will help you decide if you should consider a corporate or comedy magician for your next event, I think you’ll be happy you did.

Corporate and Kids Magic Shows: What’s the Difference?

When you book a magician for an event, you need to make sure you have the right show from the right professional for your audience. After all, what kid has ever been willing to sit through a complete corporate presentation, even if it’s cool? And there’s no adult that will willingly put themselves through a kids show without a child of their own.

But if you’ve never booked a professional magician before, it’s hard to know the difference, or what to look for! But I’ve broken it all down here, so you can learn

  • Why it’s good that kids magic shows are shorter

  • Why adult magic shows don’t work for kids

  • How kids magic shows and adult magic shows are structured

  • How big each kind of party should be

Magic Difficulty Level

Magic is never easy. If it were, everyone would know how to do it! But there is difficulty, and then there is difficulty. Some of it plays better with the right audience, and some of it flies over heads, so it’s important to know which is which.

Corporate

Adults appreciate subtlety and complexity. These are the kinds of shows where magicians can do close up magic and tricks that look small but stick with you for hours because even up close, you can’t figure them out. The illusions in adult magic shows are smaller, but much more difficult.

Kids

Children are aware that there’s a lot they don’t know about the world. When they see complex tricks, for all they know, that’s just how things always work. That’s why kids magic is simpler, but also bigger and showier. Magicians work with objects and concepts kids already know all about, and make it big and funny to keep their attention.

Length of Magic Show

Like many other things in life, the quality of the magic show doesn’t come from the length, but what we do with it. (Wink wink!)

Corporate

Adults have much longer attention spans than kids do, so corporate magic shows get to be as long as you want - they can go as long as an hour! Tricks can be woven together, and the magician can even incorporate a storyline because they know that the grown ups will follow it.

Kids

This one is simple - kids magic shows are shorter, just like their attention spans! They tend to run twenty to thirty minutes because children just aren’t willing to sit around and for much longer. Often the magician can hang around and do a few individual tricks for interested kids, or they’ll offer other party services, but the magic show itself is pretty quick.

The Show Around the Magic Show

Have you ever noticed that a magic show isn’t just magic? There’s so much more to putting on a good show than the illusions within it, like making you laugh while we do it!

Corporate

Corporate magic shows allow for a much more adult sense of story and humor. Not only can a corporate magic show withstand a storyline as discussed above, but the magician can also play with the audience’s attempt to figure out the trick and make more adult jokes that would, at best, fly over the heads of kids. Magicians are also often comedians.

Kids

Kids magic shows are so much sillier! The show involves less of a story and more of a funny character. It’s almost like clown work, but without the makeup and outfit. The magician can still make your kids laugh, but it’s over the top kids humor, like a character who is shocked by how many handkerchiefs come out of their mouth.

The Size of the Magic Show

Don’t get me wrong, at all ages there can be magic shows of all sizes. You can do kids magic for just the family, or a corporate show for an audience of hundreds. But when it comes to what each show typically looks like and how the average event goes, the below seems to hold pretty true.

Corporate

Corporate magic shows tend to be smaller, for just one or two company teams. Or even less than that, they’re big events but with performers doing walk around magic for groups of two to five or so. They incorporate personal interaction and close up magic work.

Kids

A kid’s birthday party is often a huge affair, with at least all of the kids from their class, and sometimes more. That’s a lot of people with a very short attention span! In order to keep every child’s attention for the entire show, it has to involve showier, grander illusions. Those require some space, but there isn't a kid (or parent!) who won’t be mesmerized by them.

I hope these distinctions are helpful as you look for great performers for your party! While most magicians have packages that can accommodate either children or adults (including me!) it’s always important to make sure you’re getting the right show for your event. But, so long as you do, I can guarantee that everyone will have a… magical time.

Are there any differences between corporate and kids magic shows that you think I missed? Feel free to reach out to me with whatever you’ve noticed! You can email me anytime, or find me on Instagram at @magicalkatrina_ or TikTok at @magicalkatrina.

*** I know I link to a couple of other magicians here. Don’t worry, neither of them work anywhere close to you! One is in Nashville, and the other is in the UK. I’m not linking to your competition.  :)

This is another article where I didn’t include images because it’s perfectly reasonable for you to include pictures of you doing kids magic and corporate magic. If you’d like me to find something more generic instead, I’m happy to do that! But also, since it’s still on topic, you can just use your own photos, just so long as they’re not glamour shots but pictures of you actually doing the thing.

Corporate Event Planning Help
virtual corporate magician

If the burden of planning a corporate event has fallen into your lap you are no doubt stressed out. Event planning is difficult, particularly for amateurs and those who have never planned an event before. Planning your company’s event involves little more than following a series of steps common among professional corporate event planners. Follow these steps closely and no one will know that your company’s event wasn’t planned by the pros.

  1. Come up with a theme. Regardless of what the event is for -- training, morale, team building -- there needs to be a theme holding the event together. Deciding on what your event’s theme is will guide all other aspects of planning.

  2. Set a rough budget. You won’t need to line item every single point on the budget. You should, however, have a vague idea of how much will be spent all told. In addition, you should have vague estimates of how much different aspects of the budget will cost, such as food, lodging, hall rental, entertainment and other major parts of the event.

  3. Look into venues and vendors. You need a space for your event at the very least. Other things that you might need are food, furniture and audio-visual equipment. Make meetings with vendors to get prices for services offered. Get a wide number of quotes so that you have different options to balance against one another.

  4. Look into hiring entertainment or an emcee to host the event. A Magician is a great addition to any event!

  5. Finalize the menu with your caterer. Make sure to have options for every dietary requirement that may be in attendance -- vegetarian, vegan, kosher, halaal, or anything else.

  6. Get decorations that are appropriate for the theme. Do this after you have decided on a final venue, as the décor will have to go with the venue.

  7. Send out invitations. You can do this through snail mail or electronic mail, but both together is the best method. You can also use email alerts to ensure that people RSVP in time.

  8. Create an extensive to-do list. Create a master list of everything that needs to be done before the event happens. Include the deadline for when these tasks must be completed. Make notes of who, if anyone, tasks have been delegated to. Follow up on tasks and make sure that everyone is taking responsibility for his assigned duties. One week before and one day before go through the list and double check to make sure that everything has been done.

  9. Designate an event runner. This is a position far less glamorous than the name would have you believe. An event runner is a glorified gopher who does everything that needs to be done on the day of the event. You may need more than one even runner if the event in question is large.

Corporate event planning can be tricky but I hope these simple ideas and steps can help you through it! Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

How to Choose the Right Los Angeles Magician for your Birthday Party?

Birthdays are special events in everyone’s life. Many people want to celebrate it and make their special day more memorable. If you are among those and want to make your birthday more fun, the best idea is to choose a magician. Whether it is your or your kid’s birthday party, a magician can add a more fun element to it. When looking for Los Angeles Children’s Magician, you may come across a few names. Choosing the best one seems confusing. So, the following are the easiest ways to choose the right magician in Los Angeles for your birthday party.

Tips to Consider when choosing the right magician for your Los Angeles Birthday party.

The Type of Party

The first, foremost thing you need to consider is the type of party you are hosting. Will the magician fit into the atmosphere you want to create at the party? Magicians who perform in large events may not be the ideal ones for the birthday party. Therefore, you should look for a specialized Los Angeles children’s magician when looking for a magician for a kid's event or Birthday.

Look at Online Reviews

One of the best aspects of choosing the right Los Angeles children magician is to look for online reviews. The magician with maximum positive reviews is worth considering. You can also check their social profiles as well as testimonials on their sites. Moreover, ask around to see if anyone in your connection has recommendations.

Ask Relevant Questions

Once you choose your desired magician, make sure to ask detailed questions. You can also ask them for the videos of their past performances, years of experience they have, how long they will perform, and the price. This will give you a clear idea about the magician you are willing to hire. You should take your time and ask all questions that come into your mind.

Entertainment Value

Many people often think that a magician's role is only limited to tricks and props. But Los Angeles children’s magician is more than that. Magic is about entertaining people with interactions. So, when choosing a magician, make sure they understand the concept of interacting and entertaining people while making them engaged and comfortable.

Magical Katrina has years of experience as a Los Angeles Children’s magician. She has performed at several birthday parties and also appeared in TV shows. To know more about her work or book her for your next birthday party in Los Angeles, you can get in touch with her.
